Sealed Pot Blues

My lovely sealed pot has become  ......... undone.

I've been keeping bills inside my little pot but I couldn't keep all of the rolled coins in there (my pot was much too small) and I also had a huge jar of loose coins.  So a couple of days ago I rolled all the coins I had and marched off to the bank. My other purpose of going to the bank was to close my checking account and close my line of credit. Unfortunately it cost me $272 to discharge the mortgage attached to my line of credit. I handed over the $192 that I had received for the rolled coins plus another $80.

Right now I have no way of paying back my sealed pot the $192.  Even worse, it looks like I might have to make use of the bills in there for my birthday weekend away next weekend. So I feel like I'm having a little Christmas in May! It does make me sad though to have to use that money now but the money is going towards two things that make me VERY happy! My line of credit is KAPUT and I really need a weekend away right now.  I will consider the time away as some much needed stress therapy.

I am going to continue to save $$ in my sealed pot. And when I can I will make up for what I've taken out. It's all my stupid fault for thinking I could afford that lovely fire burner which I purchased at the beginning of May.  And I forgot how much it costs to get my passport renewed ($87) along with the cost of new photos for it($18). Then there was the license sticker for my car ($75) and the new fans/frying pan/sandals at Zellers ($108) and the little splurge at Talize ($40).  Oh, and let's not forget the $288 for my property taxes out in PEI!!

The only thing that makes me feel better (well, not the only thing) is that with the help of my sealed pot I am not adding anything to my credit card.  True, I didn't get to save quite as much as I wanted to but I did save a fair bit. And I think I can make it to the end of May without too much more trouble. (I probably shouldn't have said that - leave me alone Murphy!!)

It's all swings and roundabouts this money lark, isn't it?!
We had intented to use our tax rebate towards our line of credit BUT we replaced a net/cloth gazebo instead. We need somewhere bug free and shady to sit outside in the summer, because I'm certainly not spending it indoors!

  2. What a heroic sealed pot! Helping just when you needed it. I think that's wonderful.

Start a new one and save for a smaller treat.

  3. Well, sometimes priorities aren't what we plan for, right? Don't worry, Jane, I don't think you need to feel at all guilty about this. At least the $272 didn't come entirely from your pocket (or CC as the case may be). I think it's a great thing you have this to fall back on. :)

  4. Boy Jane, I feel your pain, I have worked like a dog for the last month and although I broke even, I feel beaten and broke.   Every time I turn around there is another bill.  I have actually thought about having to enter my sealed pot for my vacation, but I am going to try not to.  I just keep telling myself I am better off than I was last year.  So are you!  I am closer to my goals and so are you.  So things didn't  go as planned, but you are still moving forward.

  5. I think you are still ahead of the game Jane.  No steps backwards at least!

There is always "something" awaiting that costs money.  Drives me crazy some months!

  6. Sorry about your pot money but what a great way to spend it!!! June is right around the corner you can get to putting more $$ in and still have 7 months to stash the cash. You are an inspiration to us all!!

  7. While it's sad to have to use that money for bank fees (ugh!  I've had enough of those lately) at least you didn't have to borrow anything to pay that bill.  That's got to feel good knowing you're still going forward instead of back.

  8. Yes! No more credit for me! I do love my President's Choice Mastercard however. I buy almost everything with it to earn points but pay it off every day so no interest accrues. I've earned several hundred dollars worth of free groceries so win/win for me!

  9. What have we come to when spending our own savings makes us feel guilty, I took money out of my jar for a few odds and ends yesterday and it has annoyed me ever since.

  10. I'm afraid my sealed pot challenge kind of went by the wayside.  You'll find a way to make it up, may just put $5 a week extra in it.

  16. I'll start over with the sealed pot and try to throw and extra $5 a week into it to make up for what I had to spend. Better the sealed pot than the credit card!

  18. I have my eye on a screened in gazebo too! Lot of black flies and mosquitoes in PEI so we need somewhere we can relax without the constant whine of insects in our ears!

  19. I used mine a couple months ago for a new camera lens... Then I dug into it again & used $75 of it (or something like that) towards our new lawn mower! lol! I have no regrets! lol! I think it's fine you used it! :) No guilt, life's too short!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes, I agree about "no guilt" as it is our money afterall! Better than using a c/c!! Did I tell you the mug rug arrived safely? I think I did but my memory isn't what it used to be lol!  Thanks again!
