The times they are a-changin'!

How many of you are in a relationship where you both have to wake up early in the morning but at different times?  Could I get a show of hands please?.........ok, thanks, there are a number of you. How do you deal with this problem? Or maybe it isn't a problem for you. Perhaps you both jump out of bed at your predetermined times all perky and singing a happy song just chomping at the bit to begin your day. If so, I'm happy for you, truly I am...

If you were laying next to me, however, I would have to kill you!

Currently my alarm goes off at six giving me about 7 hours of sleep. Based on years of research this amount of sleep seems to work for me. While I'm not exactly perky when I get up, I am awake, and that is the most important thing. I have enough time to shower, dress, put on my war paint, pack my lunch, eat a hot breakfast, pick up a coffee and arrive at work by 7:10am.

My "other half" on the "other hand" doesn't have to be to work til 9:30am!! Yeah, so what the heck is he doing setting his alarm for....wait for it.....
5am!?!
Well, you'd have to ask HIM about THAT!! But I can tell you it sometimes includes a jog/walk around the neighbourhood, but today even though his alarm WENT OFF at 5am he decided he was "too tired" so stayed in bed.

Meanwhile I laid there wide awake waiting for MY alarm to go off at 6am.

As a result I dragged myself through my day and by the time I picked Michael up at 3:30pm I was feeling just a wee bit CRANKY!!
oh....wait....that's not my cranky face....
THAT's my cranky face....

I think I will leave you with a song...because Bob said it best - "the TIMES, they are a-changin'!!!!"

Good night all, I'm going to bed early tonight!

I don't think you would like sleeping next to Mr. 444, and not because he has restless leg syndrome and sometimes raises a leg 6 feet in the air and drops it like a falling tree in the forest...  every 25 seconds...  he also fell out of bed once - scary for him, disturbing for me, but funny in retrospect.

But he sets his cell phone to go off (annoying beepy song) every 5 minutes from some ungodly early hour and continue for hours.  WHO would want to wake up that way?  Please tell me when it's time to get up, and MAYBE let me snooze for 15 more minutes ONCE.  Not beepy wake-up sounds dozens of times for two hours.

Luckily I am the early riser.... usually at 5:30.   My  husband sleeps straight through my alarm and all the other noise I make in the morning.

Oh.... I forgot.... I did snore a bit loud, THAT DID Bother him a lot! I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and now sleep quietly with a Cpap machine.

I think I'd be the biggest beyotch anyone ever saw! I'm NOT  a morning person even whn I'm on day shift - I set my alarm for the latest possible time I can get up and put on clothes, brush hair, take dogs out to pee-only and still haul booty to work-which is 30 min before I have to leave - 6 am. IF I'm lucky enough to be able to sleep the night (or day) before I"m lucky - usually I'm awake or tossing/turning 5-6 hours before my shift begins. I've never understood anyone wanting ot be up early - I'd rather stay up late than get up early.

well we better not share a room Jane! I leap out of bed anytime after 4am bright and chirpy - I've learned to contain it till I slink out of the bedroom so DH can sleep till 6.30 on a weekday and about 9am on weekends. I can't stand staying in bed once I'm awake so I'm with Michael on the early starts.

That would just piss me off.  Now I'm mad at Michael and not even his award winning smile can smooth this one over.

He won me over by making a BBQ steak dinner...that and a few glasses of wine!

See now, it's good I know this about you before I come to stay LOL!!  I would consider myself to be a "fairly early" early bird. I don't complain about getting up at 6am but I need a solid 7 hours minimum to function well.

Jharrison56 said...

Michael can do both - stay up late AND get up early - I don't think he needs as much sleep as I do!

Jharrison56 said...

If I did I'm sure I'd have the shortest list ever the following year!! On the bright side I'd save money on stamps!!

Jharrison56 said...

You're lucky!! Sort of...

Jharrison56 said...

Glad you got that under control. I think I'm the snorer in this relationship too, but not very loud according to Michael.

Jharrison56 said...

He's a solid sleeper then. I usually am but Michael's alarm is so shrill...I wake up to music for my alarm, a more gentle awakening :)

Jharrison56 said...

I guess I should be thankful for small mercies - at least Michael's alarm only goes off once! I would be on pins and needles waiting for  the alarm again if he pressed the snooze button. I can empathize with the restless leg syndrome - mine is more of a "full body startle" syndrome but happily it only occurs occasionally - I find myself sitting right up in bed my pulse racing, my heart pounding wondering if the house is on fire or if my daughter made it home safely.

oh Jane, you have such a talent for humorous posts! thank you for my morning smile-with-tea!
That is one thing that gets me every time - when they set the alarm for way too early, then decide to sleep in longer. How dare they!!!???
I do have the luxury of sleeping in every day, but a) I'm not a sleeper-inner, and b) it doesn't really help if you're sleep deprived.
lol, love the grumpy faces - I've definitely got a variety of those!

This post prompted a LOL response! Great visuals, Jane, as usual! :)!

Oh, my! Why is it that men can roll over and be asleep again before their eyes close?? DH is that way and I'm the one wide awake. Hmmm, Michael owes you something big, methinks :)

Good Post Jane,
Hubby and I are lucky enough to be able to get up at the same time 5:30AM. I'm at work by 7 or a little after to get in 15min. overtime, which really adds up by the way for time off later.
Hubby is usually home before me which is why I car pool one way. I still hate getting up early and on the weekends sleep in if possible where as Hubby is usually up, BUT IS VERY VERY QUIET or I would kill him. Sorry but I need my sleep as I have a very high stressful job which requires my brain to be fully working so the weekends are for my batteries to recharge.
Can't wait till retirement so everyday will feel like a weekend.

Wow that sucks! But  know what you mean because when BF gets up for hi 7am shifts at 5:30am I'm up with him. once I am up I am up.I hope you get to catch up on your missed sleep!

kim said...

I solved this problem by getting up in the middle of the night and going to bed in the next room.  Yes I have to make 2 beds but I am not up with the lights on at 5.a.m.

Jharrison56 said...

A very creative solution Kim, but how do you wake up in the middle of the night?

Jharrison56 said...

I did catch up last night - had a great sleep. Michael is going to wait until MY alarm goes off and get up at the same time as me - happy ending!

Jharrison56 said...

I understand - my job also requires my brain to be rested as I need to make tough decisions frequently throughout the day. Hard to be decisive when you are dead on your feet. On weekends I sleep til 8 or 8:30am which catches me up.

Jharrison56 said...

He's made dinner the last two nights - it pays to complain!

Came into your blog three times yesterday to post a comment, which was about Michael's halo slipping ever so slightly. But I could not leave a comment, so I have updated java script and now it seems to be OK....

Jharrison56 said...

Yes, he's not quite perfect LOL! But he has many redeeming qualities :)

Be very thankful for small mercies! This used to be the only thing DH and I would fight about. He would set his alarm for 5:30 and hit snooze for over an hour. I would just be dozing back off when the stupid thing would beep again. It made me completely insane. This was back when I was university and didn't have to get up early, so I stayed up late studying and then dealt with this every morning. Now we have an early-bird 8 month old baby to get me up (haven't set an alarm since he was born!) which is fine, as I'm naturally an early to bed early to rise kinda girl. Before our little man was born, I was getting up every morning at 5:30 to walk with friends before work. Getting ready in the dark was a bit challenging, so the other solution we came up with was to build a walk-in closet with a pocket door in our bedroom, so we could close the door and get ready in the closet so the light wouldn't bother the one sleeping in. This allowed DH to come to bed late and not bother me (much) and me to get up early and not other him (he goes back to sleep in milliseconds after waking anyway). Not feasible for all, but worked for us!

I thought about Bob Dylan when I read the title of your post but didn't actually count on the blog being about the song but LO! you posted a video. That was neat. I was working the 3rd shift a month ago while my hubby was temporarily between jobs. So while I was getting ready for work, he was getting ready for bed. While I was asleep he was up and about. So there were times I would get pretty cranky when he woke me up for one reason or another. But now the tides have turned. I decided to work full-time from home and now he's the one working the third shift. So what I do is I work at night around the time he does so we can still go to bed together. That way I don't interrupt his sleep whether accidentally or otherwise.

Ms. Jane, as you know, I now have Disqus like you.  I would like to test it out and see if we can create a comment thread that is longer than me commenting and your replying.  I want to see if it can go on and on.  Does that make sense?
When you reply to this comment, you do so through your email, right?  You hit reply and it shows a Disqus address and then you cc me, correct?  If not, how do you do it so that it shows up on your blog and emailed to me at the same time?

Last night was NOT a good sleep night so it's off to school I go feeling tired but I'm going to try very hard not to be cranky LOL! Thanks for your comment - working two different shifts must have been a nightmare - what a great solution you came up with!

Jharrison56 said...

That IS a good solution!  It was having Kazi that made me an early riser too LOL! But you get used to it and the good thing was she was a great little napper so I'd have a break both in the morning and afternoon and she was usually asleep by 6 or 7pm and sleep straight through til 6am. How about your little man - is he a good sleeper?

Hmmmmmmm good question and I'm not a techie but here's what I do. I respond to the email notification so let me know if you get this reply in your email. I already know that the response shows up in my comments. How this happens I have no idea. IF I respond to a comment on my blog instead of through email I get an email notification AND it also shows up as a reply to someone's comment. It's just magic I guess :) Big help I know. I don't do anything special to have both happen at the same time. I know it works because I had a long thread going with one person once but most people don't respond to my replies, only occasionally. So although I always reply to everyone's comment (via email, no cc) people seem to move on quickly instead of staying with a thread. so now, let me see if YOU respond to this reply :)
